It Wasn't Just Postpartum—My Wake-Up Call with Hormone Imbalance
Hello, friend. I want to share a story that is deeply personal, but one I've discovered resonates with so many women. For years after the birth of my second child, I was fighting a battle I thought was Postpartum Depression. I felt exhausted, irritable, anxious, and emotionally unstable. The doctor visits, the misdiagnoses, the sense of failure—it was overwhelming.
It took years of searching and advocating for myself to finally get an answer that changed everything: It wasn't just PPD. I was experiencing hormone imbalance, likely early peri-menopause, starting around age 27.
The Hormone Mystery: Misconceptions and Endocrine Disruptors
When you hear "hormone imbalance," you might think of hot flashes or older women. I certainly did. But the symptoms can be much more complex, and often get mislabeled.
Symptoms of Hormone Imbalance (The List I Wish I Had):
Unexplained anxiety, mood swings, and irritability.
Chronic fatigue and "brain fog."
Insomnia and disrupted sleep patterns.
Persistent weight gain or difficulty losing weight.
Changes to skin, hair, and menstrual cycles.
I was trying to fix myself with different remedies, unaware that the real disruption was coming from the very environment I was trying to keep clean.
The Hidden Danger: Endocrine Disruptors
This is the eye-opening part I need to share: Many of the things we assume are safe or even necessary in our homes are actually Endocrine Disrupting Chemicals (EDCs). These EDCs mimic or interfere with the body’s natural hormones—including estrogen, testosterone, and thyroid hormones—which can cause chaos in our systems.
Common Misconceptions (or Where EDCs are Hiding):
Misconception: "If it smells clean, it is clean."
Reality: The synthetic fragrances and "air fresheners" used in many cleaning products contain Phthalates, which are potent EDCs often not even listed on the label.
Misconception: "Antibacterial products are always best for health."
Reality: Chemicals like Triclosan (once common in antibacterial soaps) are EDCs that can interfere with thyroid function and contribute to antibiotic resistance.
Misconception: "Plastics are safe for food storage."
Reality: Many plastics contain BPA (Bisphenol A) and related compounds that can leach into food, acting as EDCs that interfere with the reproductive system.
The Lightbulb Moment: My Norwex Discovery
The day I realized I could not control my body’s chemistry on my own, but I could control what chemicals I introduced into my home, was a massive turning point.
I realized that every time I scrubbed my counters with a scented cleaner or wiped down a window, I was unknowingly adding fuel to my body's fire of hormonal chaos. My first step was small, but foundational. I decided I needed to give my body a fighting chance by removing the biggest offenders.
I started where most people do: with two simple cloths—the EnviroCloth and the Window Cloth. Seeing how easily I could clean everything from sticky kitchen messes to sparkling mirrors using just water and these two items was proof to me that chemicals were not necessary.
This realization that simple, non-toxic cleaning was not only possible but superior is what led me to jump in completely. I invested in my own consultant starter kit, which included the foundational Safe Haven 5 set. This complete set solidified my mission to create a true safe haven at home—without the toxins, complexity, or harmful fragrances.
